To provide students with additional opportunities to broaden and enrich their educations, Black Hawk College offers a variety of concentrations. A concentration consists of a minimum of 12 credits of specialized coursework in a particular discipline. Concentrations may be completed as a way to give a coherent pattern to elective credits, to expand transfer options aligned with a degree pathway, to prepare for upper division coursework, or simply to explore certain subjects in greater depth. Students enrolled in either the 60-credit Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degree programs will have the option of selecting a concentration or the standard program.

Concentrations consist of a minimum of 12 credits of specialized coursework and are available in:

  • Accounting
  • Anthropology
  • Art - Visual Art
  • Art - History
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Criminal Justice
  • Economics
  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Political Science
  • Pre-Engineering
  • Psychology
  • Speech
  • Sociology

Coursework that is applied toward fulfillment of elective or General Education requirements may count toward a concentration.

Students may declare more than one concentration, but cannot declare or earn two concentrations that share more than 50% of the same coursework.

Students are not required to declare a concentration.

Students declaring a concentration must do so prior to degree conferral.
