The Medical Coding Specialist Certificate prepares students for employment in the medical coding and billing field. Graduates are eligible to work in coding departments, physicians’ offices, healthcare clinics, emergency care clinics, chiropractic offices, psychiatric clinics, and health insurance companies. After gaining experience, remote coding opportunities may also be available.
The role of a Medical Coding Specialist involves translating diagnoses, procedures, services, and supplies into numeric and alphanumeric codes for accurate statistical reporting and reimbursement. Students develop proficiency in CPT and ICD-10 coding, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, third-party reimbursement and coverage policies, and HIPAA regulations. Additional skills include abstracting and reviewing inpatient and outpatient medical records, resolving insurance denials, and collaborating effectively with the healthcare team.
Students complete a 180-hour simulation-based externship, gaining practical experience in coding, documentation, and reimbursement processes in a structured environment that reflects current industry practices and the growing trend toward remote medical coding.

• Utilize technology successfully for the management of health care information.
• Apply sensitivity to client cultural diversity especially in communication.
• Use CPT and ICD-10 medical coding accurately.
